Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns played a blazing 67 to power his team to a four-run win over Chennai Superstars in a Twenty20 match of the ICL played on Saturday night, keeping the team's hopes alive in the tournament.
The skipper's knock came off 32 balls and helped the team amass 195/8, the highest in the tournament so far. The Lions have now played four matches earning two wins while the Superstars have won two from five matches. The Superstars needed five runs to win off the last ball, but former South African medium-pacer Andrew Hall kept his nerves in the last over when former Kiwi wicket-keeper Adam Parore was given run out for 2. Superstars middle-order batsman SV Sarvanan's unbeaten 32 off 20 balls went in vain while opener, former Australian batsman Ian Harvey was the star of their innings with 58 in 37 balls (six boundaries and three sixes). Lions all-rounder Dinesh Mongia made amends for his batting failure and scalped Harvey in the 16th over. G Vignesh got 42 off 22 balls but Russel Arnold (run out for 0), Hemang Badani (7) and skipper Stuart Law (8) failed to contribute to Superstars' innings. Lions opener and former Kiwi batsman Lou Vincent gave a terrific start to the team and his individual score of 42 came in just 22 balls, which included eight fours. T Kumaran and J Sayeed Mohmmed took three wickets each. Former Pakistani pacer Shabbir Ahmed was the most expensive bowler giving away 45 runs in his alloted quota of four overs. |
