Sridhar Iyer produced a match-winning spell to guide Mumbai Champs to a 35-run victory over Chandigarh Lions in the ICL's Edelweiss 20s challenge match at Tau Devi Lal stadium today.
The right arm leg-spinner, playing his second game of the tournament, was awarded man of the match for his spirited performance. He bowled a tight line and picked up two crucial wickets of TP Singh (21) and Dinesh Mongia (15) giving away just 13 runs off his four overs. The target of 161 for Lions seemed too huge for them as they finished at 125 for eight and lost crucial wickets at regular intervals. Michael Kasprowicz, too, used the conditions to good effect as he bowled very cheaply with an economy rate of five runs an over. He picked up two wickets which also included the prized scalp of dangerous Chris Cairns. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, Champs were off to a horrendous start as the lost opener Dheeraj Jadhav with team score at zero. Former South African all-rounder Andrew Hall was the pick of the bowlers for Lions as he claimed four wickets giving away just eight runs in his three overs. The Champs were reeling at 15 for two but a timely 60-run partnership between Subhojit Paul (30 off 25 balls) and captain Nathan Astle provided some momentum to the innings. Astle scored a well-paced 42 off 31 balls that had five hits to the fence and towering hit over the ropes off Cairns. However, a late order flourish from Kiran Khirid (32 off 21 balls) helped the Champs to reach a respectable total of 160 for nine in their 20 overs. |
