Delhi Giants v Lahore Badshahs

Indian Cricket League 2007 Season News

Lahore Badshahs wins against Delhi Giants

The 19th match of the Edelweiss 20s Challenge was played at the sparkling new venue of the ICL at Gurgaon and featured the hosts Delhi Giants taking on the dominant Lahore Badshahs. A match of great interest, as it was the first match at the new sparkling facility of the ICL and also involved some of the brightest young domestic talents like Bali, Mishra, Murtaza and Abbas test their skills against international stalwarts like Inzamam, Mushtaq and Azhar Mahmood.
The virgin track presented a sporting look and Marvan Atapattu won the toss and elected to bat first. The Giants started their biggest test at the Edelweiss 20s Challenge with Gunawardane and Mohnish Mishra. Azhar Mahmood struck the first blow for the Badshahs getting the wicket of Gunawardane with his deadly slower ball, in the 3rd over to reduce the Giants to 19/1. At the end of the 5thover in this high pressure (reminiscent of the great India VS Pakistan rivalry) match, the Giants had got off to a steady start, placed at 31/1 and Mishra and captain Atapattu battling it out for the Giants in the middle. The Giants' 50 came in the 8th over, off 47 balls, with Mishra soaking in the pressure of playing to a capacity filled stadium and playing a crucial knock for the home side. Mishra's knock however came to an end when he was foxed by the experienced Mushtaq in the 9th over for a well made 33. At the half way mark of their innings the Giants were knocked back slightly by the high quality Badshahs attack and were placed at 58/3. Mushtaq's high quality spin proved too classy for the young Abbas Ali reducing the Giants to 63/4 in the 11th over. Two quick wickets of Benkenstein and Bali reduced the Giants batting in complete disarray at 71/6 in the 13th over.
By the 16th over the Giants had further slumped down to 80/7 finding the Badshahs bowling too hot to handle. The Giants could never quite recover from the middle order collapse and their innings finally folded at 103/7 in their allotted 20overs. In their reply the Badshahs were facing some real hostile pace from the Giants spearhead, Shane Bond. Taduri Sudhindra proved to be the perfect foil for Bond's hostile pace at the other end with his accurate line and length bowling and got the first Badshahs wicket in the form of Imran Farhat, reducing the Badshahs to6/1 in the 2nd over. By the end of the sixth over the Badshahs were placed at 41/1, with Imran Nazir taking control of the Badshahs innings with two boundaries of Sudhindra in the same over. The second breakthrough for the Giants came in the form of Humayun Farhat who holed out one to long on for 16, at that stage the Badshahs were comfortably placed at 65/3 needing another 39 off 68 balls and Imran Nazir in control of the innings. Shane Bond came for one last burst in the 13thover but a couple of missed opportunities in form of a run-out & dropped catch, faded any remote chances for the Giants to make a come back in the match.
