Breaking News : Indian Cricket League formation

Cricket league a new innings for Indian sports

Subhash Chandra's Indian Cricket League, scheduled to start playing in September, has the potential to revolutionise the stoic Indian sports industry, if successful. It may spawn more such leagues, freeing players from the fiefdom of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Players may be traded for instance a Sachin representing Birla's Bihar Boys today and Mittal's Mumbai XI tomorrow. Teams may be sold for a bounty and private equity firms and bankers willing to finance team buyouts. It may spark a new era in sports branding and marketing. Welcome to the new cricketing era!
Team buyouts in sports are quite common in the US and Europe. Washington Redskins, which plays in the NFL (National Football League) in US, was bought over by ex-freelance journalist Daniel Snyder in 1999 for $800-million along with two stadia. The teams worth, mere $10 million in 1999, shot to $1.1 billion at last count. In 2005, the English Premier League generated revenues of over $2.5 billion, National Basketball Association (NBA)$3.2 billion, National Hockey League (NHL)$1.8 billion and NFL $5.2 billion. Like other leagues, NFL provides $100 million per year to each team from its rich kitty build through hawking TV and radio rights, sponsorships and ticket revenues.
Rich league teams also build their own infrastructure. For instance, Daniel Snyder built 18 stadia and sold naming rights of many to sponsors. Naming rights of its Maryland stadium were sold to FedEX in 1999 for an average of $7.6 million per year. If successful, cricket leagues can give the much needed boost to domestic cricket infrastructure by building world class pitches. ICL has tied up with infrastructure development company IL&FS (Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services) for the same.
Cricket leagues may start their own broadcast channel or sell broadcast rights. NFL for instance has launched its own cable-TV channel. Teams also have their own radio channels. NFL's Super Bowl is the top-rated TV program in US today unlike most cricket matches in India, which catch an average TRP of 3-4% on par with a B-class TV soap opera. SuperBowl TV ratings range from 41% to 58% in local markets, where the game is being played. According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the cost for a 30-second TV spot during 2006 SuperBowl rose to $2,500,000. Other leagues like NBA, PHL in US and English Premier League in Europe attract equally high TV ratings. With corporate rallying behind various leagues, BCCI's monopoly over Indian cricket may well end if the government starts choosing best players from different leagues to form a national team. ICL has shot off a letter to BCCI to work in tandem and share players. "We may offer better salaries and contracts at better terms," said an Essel Group official. BCCI's Niranjan Shah told ET: "We are thinking on it. A decision is yet to be taken."
Globally, sports leagues have well defined rules for buying out players. In NFL, for instance if a club offers a higher salary package to a player, the player's current team has "right of first refusal" over the contract at those terms, and may sign the player on new terms. A player, who has five or more years of experience becomes an unrestricted free agency, whereby his current team has no guaranteed right to match outside offers to that player. In NFL, a player's salary includes an annual pay and a one-time signing bonus, paid in full when the player signs his contract. Minimum salary depends upon the number of years of experience.

Essel proposal likely to be shot down

The Indian Cricket Board is likely to reject the proposal of Essel Group to run a parallel cricket league in the country in its Working Committee meeting, BCCI sources said.
Essel Group which runs Zee TV, had floated the concept of a parallel domestic competition - Indian cricket league - and sought permission from BCCI in this regard. BCCI sources said the Working Committee which is meeting today is likely to take a decision on the matter after discussion on the proposal submitted by the Essel Group. Sources said apart from being a rival to the cricket establishment, the Essel Group proposal would run contrary to BCCI's constitution.
The chairman of the Essel Group, Subhas Chandra had launched the ICL at New Delhi two days back with an aim to create a reserve pool of talent in the country. In the first year, ICL will have six teams comprising of two national, four international and eight budding cricketers each and play in home and away basis. With a whopping $ 1 million as prize money for the tournament, Essel Group had said it would pump in Rs 100 crore for the whole set-up which includes building cricketing infrastructure across the country. The Working Committee meeting which began here today will discuss the reports of coach Greg Chappell, manager Sanjay Jagdale and skipper Rahul Dravid on the debacle in the World Cup where India made a exit in the league round. Besides discussing the recommendation by former captains on means and ways to improve the game in the country, the meeting will also take up the matter of how to go about to select a new coach for the Indian team.

Indian Cricket League - ICL

Zee launches ambitious $232mn Indian Cricket League

In a move effectively challenging the Indian cricket board's national tournaments, Zee Group Tuesday announced the launch of an ambitious Indian Cricket League (ICL) with a corpus fund of Rs 1 billion ($232.26 million) and a promise to field many international players.

Stung by the announcement and in order to stop speculation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) quickly issued a statement that its president Sharad Pawar has received a letter, but said no more.
The announcement came as a surprise also because Zee owns the BCCI rights for overseas international cricket. Zee won the five-year rights for $219.15 million.

"A professional league is the need of the hour as is the killer instinct in the players. We will try to do it as early as possible -- maybe in July," said Zee group chairman Subhash Chandra at a press conference here.
Chandra sounded extremely confident of getting the BCCI approval for ICL, whose winner would receive $1 million - the highest prize money ever announced for a cricket tournament in the country.
"It is not in conflict with the BCCI, but is complimentary to it. We have sent a proposal to the BCCI and I don't think they will reject it. I even don't want to assume that BCCI will reject it," he said.

BCCI, which has already called a working committee meeting in Mumbai Saturday to discuss the World Cup debacle, will perhaps have to add another item to its agenda. The board statement said: "BCCI president Sharad Pawar has received a letter from Mr. Subhash Chandra, Zee Television, seeking permission to start the Indian Cricket League. An appropriate decision in this matter will be taken by the board."
The ambitious league, if allowed by the BCCI, threatens to do what late Australian millionaire Kerry Packer did almost three decades ago when he hired the world's top players for his own World Series Cricket following his fight for television rights with the Australian board. Chandra said that the current Indian team players along with those from other countries would be seen in action in the league. He said the ICL would be an annual feature. All the matches will be telecast on Zee Sports. Zee also plans to set-up residential academies equipped with state-of-the-art facilities across the country.
Sports medicine would be introduced to ensure top fitness of players and a full-fledged record of their behavioural pattern, diet-plan and game statistics would be maintained. The group will also appoint talent scouts in all 35 states to hunt for young players to play in the league. "We have expertise in talent-search in the entertainment field, we will use that same expertise to unearth cricketing talent in India," Chandra said. He said each team would have a coach, physiotherapist, and psychologist. The league will have a professional media manager, and an ombudsman to resolve issues that may be raised by the public, or even by the players.

"A professional league is the need of the hour as is the killer instinct in the players. Budding talent must be groomed at the grass-roots level and given the experience to play on competitive pitches and not on placid tracks." Chandra, however, declined to disclose the names of the players likely to take part. "There are a few big names which we don't want to disclose now." He added that other companies are invited to launch their own clubs or teams and can take part in the league. "We would love participation from other companies as well. They are invited to launch their own teams and take part in the league very similar to what we have in the National Football League," he said.

The Indian Cricket League Format

The Indian Cricket League will consist of six teams or clubs in the first year and will be increased to 16 over the next three years. To start with, all the matches will be Twenty20 affairs and will be played on home-and-away basis. Gradually, the format of the matches will be changed to 50-over a side. The champion team will get the winner's purse of $1 million. Each team in the league will have two Indian international players registered with the BCCI, four foreign players and the rest young and budding players. The players, who will take part in the ICL, will be contracted with the company and will get a fixed amount every month.

The finer points of ICL:
  • 6 teams or clubs to play in opening year
  • Talks on with BCCI for gaining access to stadiums
  • Executive Board of the league under installation
  • Pool of referees and umpires to be created
  • Rules committee to form regulations for ICL
  • Ombudsman to look into grievances of players
  • League to begin with Twenty20 format and move to ODI format
  • League to be a joint venture between Essel Group and ILFS Group
  • Each of the 6 teams to be coached by an ex-India player
  • Each team would comprise four foreign, two Indian and eight budding players
  • Each team to have a mentor, media manager, psychologist, physio
  • Prize money for the winner- USD 1 million
  • League teams to compete with teams internationally
  • Number of teams to be increased from 6 to 16 in three years
