Breaking News : Indian Cricket League formation

Sri Lankan players too approached to play in the ICL

A wealthy rebel league in India seems set to take Sri Lankan cricket by storm as several top players have been approached to join the lucrative series, sources said yesterday.
The Indian Cricket League promoted by Zee Telefilms, the country's largest lmedia group, features six teams that will play Twenty20 matches across India. Each team in the league, which has not been recognized by the International Cricket Council or the Board of Control for Cricket in India, will have four international players, two Indian stars and eight up-and-coming players. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) sources said several players were privately approached by agents during a series here with Bangladesh, but that the SLC would not allow any contracted players to join the rebel league.
"If they go ahead and join the league, the result would be similar to the 1982 rebel tour to South Africa," an SLC source said. Fourteen Sri Lankan cricketers led by Bandula Warnapura were banned for 25 years in 1982 for playing in the South African series.
But press reports here said that retired Russel Arnold has accepted the offer and is negotiating with the new league. Arnold was not available for comment. At least two other Sri Lankan star players have been offered contracts ranging from US$500,000 to US$600,000 for each of the three years in the playing contract.

Indian Cricket League approaches Inzamam

Inzamam ul-Haq has been approached by the organisers of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) to play for one of the participating teams and the former Pakistan captain is considering the proposal.
Inzamam, who retired from One-Day Internationals after the World Cup in March, confirmed today that ICL had made an official offer to him and he was looking into it. I am excited at the prospects of playing alongside other great players and if the terms are right I will certainly play in the league, Inzamam said in an interview. The senior batsman, however, made it clear he was not acting as an agent on behalf of the league organisers and was not aware if any other Pakistani player had been signed on.
Inzamam retired from one-dayers and left the captaincy after Pakistan were knocked out of the World Cup in the first round. The ICL Twenty20 cricket has been launched by Essel Group, which owns Zee Telefilms. But the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has warned all its affiliated units and players not to play in the league or face disciplinary action. Despite the stand-off, the organisers have managed to sign on former West Indies skipper Brian Lara, who will captain one of the sides in the league, while talks are also on with Australian stars Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath.

Fleming linked to Indian cricket league

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been approached to be part of the breakaway Indian Cricket League (ICL), according to an Australian newspaper report.
The Australian newspaper said Fleming was considering his position and may retire from the international game to take up the lucrative offer. The newspaper said Fleming was being sought to captain one of the six proposed teams on a three-year deal believed to be worth more than $A500,000 ($NZ556,111) a year.
It said Australian greats Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath were also negotiating with ICL, with Warne believed to be in line for almost $A2 million over three years if an agreement can be reached.
Brian Lara became ICL's first major signing this week for $A500,000 a year. Fleming, 34, is playing county cricket in England. He retired from one-day cricket after the World Cup but is due to lead the New Zealand test team to South Africa in late October and November, when the first ICL Twenty20 tournament is due to be played.
Fleming is New Zealand's leading test runscorer with 6620 at an average of 39.64 from 104 tests. He has been captain in 80 of those matches. The league proposes to field six teams each featuring four international players, two Indian stars and eight up-and-comers playing up to eight Twenty20 matches at three Indian venues over a month.

Warne and McGrath for new Indian Cricket league

Australian cricket icons Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath could soon follow West Indies great Brian Lara and play in a multi million dollar 20-20 cricket tournament.
A breakaway league is being bankrolled by a giant Indian media company to play a month-long 6-team competition across India later this year. Each team will consist of four international stars, two Indian stars and eight up-and-coming players.
The dates and the venues for the series have not been announced, but the matches are not endorsed by either the International Cricket Council or the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Warne has been playing county cricket for Hampshire and has been linked to the rebel cricket series since it was announced in May.

Brian Lara to make comeback in Indian Cricket league

Former West Indies skipper Brian Lara will come out of retirement to play in Indian cricket league to be launched later this year, its organisers said on Monday.
"We've signed up Lara, he will be playing and captaining one of the teams," Himanshu Mody, business head of Zee Sports, told Reuters. India's Essel Group, which controls the country's biggest listed media firm Zee Telefilms, launched the Twenty20 league in May to stage an annual tournament featuring foreign players and some current India players.
Lara, 38, announced his retirement from all cricket after this year's World Cup where the home team failed to reach the last four, although the batting maestro did not rule out a return.
India's board has refused permission for the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and warned its state affiliates and home players of action if they associated themselves with it. The board has asked World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev to choose between remaining the chairman of the national cricket academy or being a board member of the league.
Former India players Madan Lal and Sandeep Patil had signed up as coaches while their former team mate Balwinder Sandhu would head the ICL's planned cricket academy, Mody said. The ICL would announce the venue and names of more players soon, he said.

Non-contracted Pak cricketers can play in ICL

Pakistan Cricket Boards (PCB) Chief Operating Officer Shafqat Naghmi has said that the board cannot bar those cricketers from playing in the Indian Cricket League (ICL) in India who are not given a central contract.
"If some former (Pakistani) cricketer or a player who doesnt have a contract with the PCB decides to play in the series, then we have no way to legally bound him against going to India," Naghmi said. However, he added that the PCB might get involved if the organisers of the ICL approach any players contracted by the board.
"If any player contracted by us wants to go there, then that would be a different case," he said. Naghmi tried to distance the PCB from the ICL, which is being termed as a parallel league to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), saying The ICL is happening in another country so it is not our business.
He, however, dismissed speculations that the PCB might block their players from figuring in the ICL to please their Indian counterparts, and said that the board has not taken any policy decision on this issue. His statement assumes significance as the board is to award central contracts to 20 of their leading cricketers. In addition, the Board would also keep 20-25 players on a retainer, The News reported.
Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has been appointed as the head of the Executive Board of the Zee Group backed ICL. Other members of the Executive Board include former wicketkeeper and ex-chief selector of the BCCI Kiran More, former England captain Tony Greig and Australian cricketer-turned-commentator Dean Jones. The Zee Group has announced that the ICL will be set up with a corpus of 100 crore rupees. It would have six teams or clubs in its initial year.
Within three years, the number of teams would be increased to 16. Each team in the league would have four international players. Zee will also appoint talent scouts in all Indian states to hunt for young players to play in the ICL.

BCCI threatens to take steps against Kapil

The Cricket Board on Tuesday threatened to take "appropriate steps" against former captain Kapil Dev for aligning with the rebel Indian Cricket League despite occupying the post of National Cricket Academy (NCA) Chairman.
The BCCI said that it had made it very clear that no cricketer or official should be part of the ICL and it was for Kapil to relinquish one post. "The BCCI does not recognise the ICL. It was a decision of the Working Committee that any cricketer or official being involved in the ICL would have no role to play in BCCI. It is for Kapil Dev to decide what he wants to do," BCCI joint secretary MP Pandove told PTI, reacting to Kapil's outburst against the board.
Asked specifically what BCCI would do if Kapil did not relinquish the post of NCA Chairman, Pandove said, "We will discuss the issue and take appropriate steps." After BCCI had shot a letter to Kapil asking him not to align with the ICL, the former all-rounder sent his reply and also dared the board to sack him from the NCA post. "They can remove me from the NCA if they want to. They only wanted me to contribute to the game of cricket and when I am doing so they cannot challenge me. If I can do something for the game and the young cricketers through Indian Cricket League, I will not budge," he asserted.

Indian Cricket League - ICL

Zee launches ambitious $232mn Indian Cricket League

In a move effectively challenging the Indian cricket board's national tournaments, Zee Group Tuesday announced the launch of an ambitious Indian Cricket League (ICL) with a corpus fund of Rs 1 billion ($232.26 million) and a promise to field many international players.

Stung by the announcement and in order to stop speculation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) quickly issued a statement that its president Sharad Pawar has received a letter, but said no more.
The announcement came as a surprise also because Zee owns the BCCI rights for overseas international cricket. Zee won the five-year rights for $219.15 million.

"A professional league is the need of the hour as is the killer instinct in the players. We will try to do it as early as possible -- maybe in July," said Zee group chairman Subhash Chandra at a press conference here.
Chandra sounded extremely confident of getting the BCCI approval for ICL, whose winner would receive $1 million - the highest prize money ever announced for a cricket tournament in the country.
"It is not in conflict with the BCCI, but is complimentary to it. We have sent a proposal to the BCCI and I don't think they will reject it. I even don't want to assume that BCCI will reject it," he said.

BCCI, which has already called a working committee meeting in Mumbai Saturday to discuss the World Cup debacle, will perhaps have to add another item to its agenda. The board statement said: "BCCI president Sharad Pawar has received a letter from Mr. Subhash Chandra, Zee Television, seeking permission to start the Indian Cricket League. An appropriate decision in this matter will be taken by the board."
The ambitious league, if allowed by the BCCI, threatens to do what late Australian millionaire Kerry Packer did almost three decades ago when he hired the world's top players for his own World Series Cricket following his fight for television rights with the Australian board. Chandra said that the current Indian team players along with those from other countries would be seen in action in the league. He said the ICL would be an annual feature. All the matches will be telecast on Zee Sports. Zee also plans to set-up residential academies equipped with state-of-the-art facilities across the country.
Sports medicine would be introduced to ensure top fitness of players and a full-fledged record of their behavioural pattern, diet-plan and game statistics would be maintained. The group will also appoint talent scouts in all 35 states to hunt for young players to play in the league. "We have expertise in talent-search in the entertainment field, we will use that same expertise to unearth cricketing talent in India," Chandra said. He said each team would have a coach, physiotherapist, and psychologist. The league will have a professional media manager, and an ombudsman to resolve issues that may be raised by the public, or even by the players.

"A professional league is the need of the hour as is the killer instinct in the players. Budding talent must be groomed at the grass-roots level and given the experience to play on competitive pitches and not on placid tracks." Chandra, however, declined to disclose the names of the players likely to take part. "There are a few big names which we don't want to disclose now." He added that other companies are invited to launch their own clubs or teams and can take part in the league. "We would love participation from other companies as well. They are invited to launch their own teams and take part in the league very similar to what we have in the National Football League," he said.

The Indian Cricket League Format

The Indian Cricket League will consist of six teams or clubs in the first year and will be increased to 16 over the next three years. To start with, all the matches will be Twenty20 affairs and will be played on home-and-away basis. Gradually, the format of the matches will be changed to 50-over a side. The champion team will get the winner's purse of $1 million. Each team in the league will have two Indian international players registered with the BCCI, four foreign players and the rest young and budding players. The players, who will take part in the ICL, will be contracted with the company and will get a fixed amount every month.

The finer points of ICL:
  • 6 teams or clubs to play in opening year
  • Talks on with BCCI for gaining access to stadiums
  • Executive Board of the league under installation
  • Pool of referees and umpires to be created
  • Rules committee to form regulations for ICL
  • Ombudsman to look into grievances of players
  • League to begin with Twenty20 format and move to ODI format
  • League to be a joint venture between Essel Group and ILFS Group
  • Each of the 6 teams to be coached by an ex-India player
  • Each team would comprise four foreign, two Indian and eight budding players
  • Each team to have a mentor, media manager, psychologist, physio
  • Prize money for the winner- USD 1 million
  • League teams to compete with teams internationally
  • Number of teams to be increased from 6 to 16 in three years
